At Paws & Prairie we do have  a fully equipped surgical suite to accommodate various different surgical procedures. We believe in utilizing the highest level of medical technology, and our surgeons and monitoring technicians are experienced and highly trained. We also realize that it can be stressful to have your pet undergo surgery. We want to assure you that your pet is in good hands, and that we will do everything to provide the best care possible. We will communicate with you about the things you need to know before, during, and after your pet’s surgery. It is our goal to make the entire process go smoothly, and to eliminate the stress and worry of surgical procedures.

What To Expect If Your Pet Is Having Surgery

You may be emailed a surgical consent form a few days prior to your scheduled surgery time. If you do not have an email, one of our staff members will go over this form with you. The form will ask you a few questions related to the surgical procedure. Or, if you have a surgery scheduled and wish to fill out the surgical consent form ahead of time, you may fill out the form below.

The day of the procedure you will be checked in by one of our surgical veterinary technicians. They will check your pets weight and temperature and will confirm all surgical details with you. Pets are then brought to our kennel rooms until they are ready for their procedure. Staff members will stay in communication with you regarding your pet’s surgery. Your pet’s surgical technician will set up a pick up time with you and will go over any medications and discharge instructions with you.

*We offer orthopedic and advanced surgical care with Dr. Calvin Kobluk, BSc, BSA, DVM, DVSc, Diplomate ACVS. He is a board certified surgeon that will travel to our clinic for surgeries that we cannot perform ourselves.

All patients must be examined within 1 year of the surgical date. We do require pre-anesthetic blood work for patients over the age of 7 years or for patients that may be experiencing illness. This ensures that pets are healthy and safe to undergo anesthesia. Surgeries are scheduled pending available surgical staff members. This means that emergency surgeries or urgent surgeries are not guaranteed. You may be referred to another surgical center if your pet needs urgent help. All surgical procedures here are out patient procedures, meaning your pet will be discharged the same day in the afternoon.  Pets having surgery must be picked up by 4:30pm or a late pick up/boarding charge will be applied. All surgical procedures will be required to pay a surgical deposit fee that will hold your surgical appointment time slot. The amount paid for the deposit fee will be subtracted from your final bill the day of the procedure. Please see our cancellation policy page for further details on deposit fee terms and conditions.

Though post-op complication risks are lower if following discharge instructions closely, complication risks do exist. In the event of a post-op complication, you will be responsible for any costs associated with any post-operative repair or treatments. However, we do not charge for post-op rechecks if you have a concern.
